Week 1

After an exciting first round of premier league matches that sees Brighton reach the summit and Everton rooted to the bottom of the table, the dust settles on the first FPL round of the season as well.

In the Head-to-Head league, current title holder Stuart Skinner was left Sith Faced by newcomer Liam Powell, being defeated by a single point. Elsewhere, we saw our first draw of the season, with Chris McCarthy and John Turner unable to seize the initiative. Martin Satterthwaite will feel somewhat fortuitous with his win over David Hodder, as he only managed a meagre 41 points. No manager used any chips in Round 1, but will anyone succumb to the allure of the ‘Wildcard’ in Round 2?

In the Classic league, Tayfun Avci sits at the top with an impressive 88 points and is just inside the global top 70,000. Liam Tritton is not far behind on 81, but those 7 points equate to 200,000 places on the global leaderboard. Great work chaps for the first round of the season! At the bottom of the table, Gavin Horton scored 30 points, just below David Hodder on 32, but with 37 rounds still to go, it really is all to play for. Just like the H2H league, no-one used any chips in this round.

Like last season, the first prizes can already be awarded. This season, there were a fair few decent team names floating about, which included Hawk Tuanzebe, Jurrien Timberlake, Curious Jorginho, and Areola Borealis. However, the award for best team name of this season goes to Shane Bennett’s Cobra Kai Havertz. Of course, with winners must come losers, and we have some really, really bad team names this time out. Pick of the bunch this time is Alfie Hibbert, with his unimaginative ‘FPL XI’. This is closely followed by Martin Satterthwaite who went for MS13, which is either a reference to his initials and preferred shirt number, or an international crime gang originating from LA. I will let you decide, but have you ever seen Martin and Jaffrey Dahmer in the same room?

In the Super 6, Dan Terry carries on his form from last season as he starts this season with an impressive 19 points. David Hodder may not be able to select 11 players to score points, but he can predict scores, as he is just behind Dan on 16 points. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Rob Gould and Chris McCarthy could only manage 4 points, but even that is better than Ali Campbell who didn’t even enter!
